Hello there! In this post I'm going to be showing you how to make a moon photo display out of air dry clay. It makes a pretty moon decoration for any room and you can make it any size and color that you want.

You can watch the video below or you can continue reading. There are two other DIYs in the video. This DIY starts at 4:56.

What you'll need:

Air Dry Clay
Cookie Cutter
Parchment Paper
Plastic Wrap
Water
Knife
Wire
Pliers
Acrylic Paint
Paintbrush

Creating The Moon

1. Place ball of air dry clay on top of a piece of parchment paper and flatten it with your hand.

2. Place another piece of parchment paper on top of it and roll the clay out. You want the clay to be about a 1/2 inch thick but you can make the thickness of the moon any size that you want.

3. When you're done rolling the clay, out you want to take parchment paper off of the top and if you need to you can roll the clay out a little more.

4. Cut out a circle out of the clay by pressing a circle cookie cutter in the clay or you can use something else.

5. Take the circle out of the cookie cutter and pull off the extra clay.

6. To create the crescent moon, you want to take the cookie cutter or whatever you used before and place the edge of it at about the middle of the clay circle.

7. Take off the extra clay with a knife or you can just pull it off.

Creating The Base

8. Put a piece of air dry clay onto a piece of parchment paper and flatten with your hand.

9. Put a piece of parchment over it and roll it out. You want the clay to be about 1/4 of an inch thick but you can make the thickness of the base any size that you want.

10. When you're done rolling out the clay, you want to take the parchment paper off and if you need to you can roll the clay out a little more.

11. Press a circle cookie cutter or something else in the clay.

12. Take off the extra clay from the cookie cutter and you also want to push out the clay from the cookie cutter.

Finishing Up The Moon & Base

13. Smooth out the edge or the cracks of the base and the moon with water and your finger. Then you can place the base and the moon onto a piece of plastic wrap.

Creating The Spiral

14. Take a piece of wire that measures about 12 inches and bend the wire into a spiral.

It will be easier to bend the wire with pliers and you want to make sure there's enough wire to go through the clay and that it stays straight.

When you're done bending the wire, you can test it to see if you like it.

Putting The Display Together

15. Score the clay with a knife where you want the moon to go. Which is where you create lines in two different directions with a knife where you want the moon to sit on the base and the bottom of the moon.

16. Put water on the bottom of the moon and where the moon will be sitting on the base with your finger.

17. Place the moon where it needs to go and hold it there for a few seconds to make sure it stays but it might move a little bit so make sure you watch it so it doesn't fall over.

18. Carefully push the wire into the top of the moon. You do want the wire in the base but make sure you don't push it to far because it will go through to the bottom which is something that you don't want. Also if the wire is to long you can cut it with wire cutters and then you can put it back in the moon.

19. Clean up any lines or cracks with water and your finger. Also if you do see the moon leaning make sure you put it back where you want it so it can dry correctly.

20. When you like how it looks wait for it to dry and make sure you read the clay instructions to see how long it will dry.

Finishing the Display

21. When the clay is dry, you want to take it off of the plastic wrap and put it onto a scrap piece of paper.

22. Paint the moon and the base with any color of acrylic paint that you want.

I painted the moon white even though the clay would dry white. It hid a lot of black specs and other stuff on it.

When I was done painting the moon, I painted the base gold and then I waited for it to dry.

When the paint is dry you can start using it. I put a polaroid that I made in the spiral.
